Once the crop is off, irrigation feels optional. It is not.

Leaves are still working. Next year’s flower buds are still being finished. The soil profile you take into winter is the one bloom will wake up in. Fall irrigation is less about this year’s grade sheet and more about whether the orchard has the carbohydrates and moisture to start the next one.

This is the follow-up to two tighter seasonal pieces already on the site: post-harvest almond irrigation (the 48 hours after shake) and the walnut August–September kernel-fill window. What follows is October through leaf drop, across nut orchards, not another almond-only harvest article.

What fall is actually for

UCCE irrigation advisors keep repeating three jobs:

  1. Avoid severe post-harvest stress. Extreme water stress after harvest has cut the following almond crop by around 40% in UC work when irrigation was withheld. That is not a reason to flood the orchard. It is a reason not to abandon it.
  • Keep leaves on the tree long enough to fill carbohydrate reserves. Premature defoliation from dry soil in August through October shows up as a thinner bloom.
  • Enter winter with moisture in the profile, both for the tree and for freeze protection. Dry soil stores less heat. Curt Pierce’s 2025 Sacramento Valley water note is blunt: if a freeze is coming and the soil is dry, irrigate two to three days ahead, then a light pass the morning of if the surface has crusted. Do not pool water on the surface, which blocks heat moving back out of the soil at night.
  • None of that requires a full-summer set length. Crop water use falls as days shorten. The mistake is treating “less ET” as “zero water.”

    Almonds: after the restart, don’t disappear

    Sacramento Valley almond notes still flag August through October as the stretch where water stress leads to defoliation and weaker bud development. October matters when it stays warm. UC and West Coast Nut both treat post-harvest irrigation as next year’s yield practice, not leftover summer watering.

    Practical checks:

    • Leaves should not be yellowing off from drought while the weather is still warm.
    • A pressure chamber (stem water potential), where you have one, beats a calendar once nights cool.
    • Watch for hull rot, rust, and shaker damage on the same walks. Those are next-year planning, not irrigation, but they happen on the same pass.

    Fall boron and zinc sprays are a nutrition decision, not an irrigation one. Do not mix those up in the set schedule. Ask the CCA; hull boron and July leaf samples drive that, not a soil-tension reading.

    Walnuts: restart after the dry-down

    Walnuts are the opposite shape of almonds in late summer. Many orchards cut water in September to stop shoot growth and set up harvest. After harvest, the job flips: reduce orchard stress, then keep the soil from going into winter empty.

    West Coast Nut’s Sacramento Valley fall notes: if rain is late through October, irrigate to keep soil moist ahead of forecast cold. Keep orchard-floor vegetation short from mid-October so the ground can actually receive heat. The freeze advice is the same pattern as other orchard crops: moisture in the profile, not a flooded floor.

    A simple October–November schedule, not a recipe

    Use this as a checklist, then adjust to the orchard:

    Question If yes If no
    Are leaves still active and weather still warm? Keep a reduced set going. Watch tension or SWP so you do not overshoot. You are closer to leaf drop. Shorter sets, or wait on rain.
    Is the root zone dry below the drip line? A real set, not a dust-settling pass. Hold. Extra water here is Phytophthora risk, not insurance.
    Is a freeze in the 3-day forecast and soil is dry? Irrigate 2–3 days ahead. Optional light pass the morning of. Leave it. Wet soil plus a freeze is not automatically safer if you already have moisture.
    Has rain started filling the profile? Cut run times. Leave room in the soil for the next storm. You still own the profile until storms are real, not forecasted.

    After leaf drop, ET on nut crops is small. SJV Trees and Vines, citing UC numbers, puts almond November ET around 1.4 inches and December around 0.5 inches in the Five Points record. Rain often covers that. Winter irrigation, if you do it, is about bloom having a full profile, in short sets, not 24-hour soaks.
