Why Late-Summer Walnut Irrigation Is a Narrow Window

Walnut irrigation in August and September is not leftover summer watering. Kernels are still accumulating dry weight. Leaves still have to drive sugar into the nut. At the same time, too much water can keep hulls green, delay drying, and open the door to kernel mold.

UC Cooperative Extension writing for Sacramento Valley walnuts has long treated midday stem water potential (SWP) as the plant-side check. A fully watered “baseline” SWP changes with weather. The irrigation trigger many advisors recommend is waiting until trees are about 2 to 3 bars drier (more negative) than that baseline, then irrigating. Sac Valley Orchards articles on spring start and season-long scheduling repeat that 2-to-3-bar rule because early, wet management can suppress root growth and leave orchards more stressed later.

UC ANR Publication 8503, Using the Pressure Chamber for Irrigation Management in Walnut, Almond and Prune, places sustained moderate to high stress for walnut roughly in the -8 to -12 bar neighborhood as a range that can hurt shoot growth, nut sizing, kernel fill, and bud fruitfulness if it lasts weeks rather than days. Those numbers are research context. Use them with a local baseline and your CCA, not as a dashboard default.

Too Wet Late Can Cost Quality

UCCE Central Sierra’s “Finish Walnut Season Strong” note (Singh and Milliron) warns against over-irrigating as harvest approaches. Excess water can keep hulls green and slow drying. Prolonged humidity around the nut gives pathogens more time to move into the kernel through the stylar end.

Their practical plant-side target for this period is similar to the season-long advice: use a pressure chamber and keep trees near about two bars below the fully watered SWP baseline. Baseline itself moves with temperature and humidity, so the same absolute reading does not mean the same thing every afternoon.

If you only look at a wet orchard floor, you can miss that the tree is already in the right mild-stress band, or that a long set is sitting water where Phytophthora risk rises. Walnuts are especially sensitive to overwatering compared with many other Sacramento Valley tree crops.

Too Dry Late Has a Price Too

Cutting irrigation too early is not free.

The same UCCE late-season note links early cutoff to shriveled hulls (stuck hulls) and kernels with darkened pellicles. Dark color and stuck hulls show up on the grade sheet. That is the other side of the same needle: wet enough to finish the kernel and keep hulls manageable, dry enough to avoid mold-friendly humidity and waterlogged roots.

Preharvest dry-down for shake is a separate, short decision. Some Sacramento Valley walnut guidance describes a brief, intentional dry-down in the week or two before harvest to improve dry-away and reduce shaker bark injury, sometimes targeting roughly -16 to -20 bars SWP for that narrow window. That is not a license to run the orchard dry through August. Confirm timing with your advisor for rootstock and variety. Krymsk-86 and other vigorous or sensitive combinations may need extra care before shake.

Young Orchards Are Not Bearing Blocks

Bearing trees and young plantings diverge in September.

For young walnuts, UCCE late-season guidance is to wrap nitrogen by the end of August and cut irrigation by mid-September long enough for a terminal vegetative bud to set on the trunk. Once that bud is set, irrigation can resume without pushing soft, frost-prone growth into an early autumn freeze. Bearing trees may set a terminal bud during a harvest dry-down, then need water again after harvest or after the bud is set.

Do not copy the young-orchard cutoff onto a Chandler block that still needs kernel fill.

What to Check Before You Change the Schedule

Use this as a field list, not a diagnosis.

  1. Confirm the growth stage: still filling kernels, nearing packing tissue brown, or into hull split and harvest prep.
  2. If you have a pressure chamber, compare midday SWP to today’s baseline, not to last week’s number alone.
  3. Check soil moisture at more than one depth. A wet surface after a short set does not prove the mid-root zone refilled.
  4. Look at flow and pressure on the set. A clogged filter or a valve that never opened will look like “the trees need more hours.”
  5. Separate young blocks from bearing blocks on the calendar.
  6. Ask whether the next change is a normal set, a shorter set, or a planned preharvest dry-down.

A schedule that worked in July can be wrong in late August for reasons that have nothing to do with a broken pump. Crop demand, hull moisture goals, and freeze prep all move.
