Why Post-Harvest Almond Irrigation Matters
Post-harvest almond irrigation is easy to postpone. Shake, sweep, pickup, and stockpile already fill the day. The orchard floor is crowded. The crew is tired. Water can look like tomorrow’s problem.
It is not.
From hull split into fall, almond trees are still building next year’s flowers. University of California Cooperative Extension puts it in one line: water stress in August through October can interfere with next year’s bud development and lead to defoliation. Dry trees after harvest mean fewer flowers next spring.
The Almond Board of California makes the same point. Timely post-harvest irrigation is critical for bloom, fruit set, and next year’s yield potential. Floral-bud work is already underway during harvest. In Nonpareil and Carmel, flower initiation can span July through mid-August, with pistil development continuing into September.
This is not a marketing idea. It is orchard physiology during the busiest weeks of the year.

What Is Happening in the Tree After Shake
Harvest is a cutoff for the crop on the ground. It is not a cutoff for the tree.

An extreme research example often cited in the industry: Nonpareil yield was reduced by 40% the following year when no postharvest irrigation was applied. That is a worst-case illustration, not a typical farm result. The practical lesson is simpler. Skipping recovery water is expensive in next year’s bloom.
UC ANR’s drought-management guidance for California almonds and the Almond Board’s Irrigation Improvement Continuum both treat plant water status, soil moisture, and system performance as the way to judge whether the orchard actually recovered.
When Should Irrigation Restart?
UCCE’s August almond notes are direct: return irrigation to the trees as quickly as possible after harvest.
West Coast Nut’s 2026 harvest notes add the field sequence many Sacramento Valley growers now use:
- Shake.
- Sweep and condition nuts into wide, thin windrows within a day or two, where you can keep irrigation water off the windrows.
- Once nuts are up, get water back on.
- Aim to bring trees back toward about 2 to 4 bars below baseline (often discussed as about -10 to -14 bars on a pressure chamber) and hold that through fall.
Those pressure-chamber targets come from advisor writing, not from a dashboard. Use them with your CCA and your own readings. Varieties, rootstocks, and harvest spread will change the calendar. The principle does not: do not leave trees dry from shake until you “get around to it.”
If later varieties are still hanging, earlier varieties may already need water. That is a block-by-block problem, not a ranch-wide on/off switch.
Why the Orchard Floor Makes This Hard
Post-harvest irrigation is inconvenient for a reason.
Water on windrows can slow drying and hurt quality. UCCE warns not to stockpile wet nuts: hull moisture above 12%, kernel moisture above 6%, or total fruit moisture above 9% raises mold and concealed-damage risk. Sample the top and the bottom of the windrow. The bottom stays wetter.
That is why pickup timing and irrigation timing belong on the same list. Fast, wide, thin windrows give you a path to irrigate without soaking the crop. Dual systems (drip plus microsprinkler) exist in some orchards for the same reason. Most farms will not rebuild their system this week. They still need a plan for how soon water can run after each variety is off the floor.
If irrigation stays off because the floor is a mess, the tree pays for the delay.
A Running Set Does Not Mean the Root Zone Recovered
Micro-irrigation does not refill a dry profile overnight. After a long dry-down for harvest, a short set can wet the surface while deeper roots stay dry.
Before you decide the orchard is “fine because we irrigated,” check:
- Soil moisture at more than one depth in the active root zone
- Whether stressed rows match a variety, a set, or a soil type
- Whether the first post-harvest set actually ran for the intended hours
- Filters, valves, and emitters after harvest traffic
Harvest is hard on irrigation hardware. Heavy equipment, extra traffic, and rodents while nuts are on the ground can leave broken lines, pinched hoses, or a valve that never opened. Low pressure with low flow often points to a restriction. Low pressure with high flow often points to a leak.
Adding hours will not fix a damaged line. It can overwater the rows that still work.

What to Check in the First 48 Hours After Pickup
Use this as a field list, not a diagnosis.
- Confirm which varieties are off the floor and which are still drying.
- Restart irrigation on the blocks that can take water without wetting windrows.
- Walk a few rows for obvious harvest damage to hose, emitters, and risers.
- Compare pressure near the head of the line with pressure at the tail.
- Look at flow during the set, not only whether the valve is open.
- Check soil moisture shallow and deeper after the set, then again the next day.
- If you use a pressure chamber, see whether trees are moving back toward your baseline rather than hanging in moderate-to-high stress.
If leaves start dropping hard in August or September after harvest, treat that as a warning, not as normal fall. Early defoliation can cut next year’s flower count. Rust and other diseases can do the same in young orchards. Irrigation is one cause among several. It is the one you can often correct this week.
