Why Early September Pistachio Irrigation Is Still a Critical Window

Pistachio irrigation around harvest is not leftover summer watering. For many California blocks, early September still sits inside Stage 3—rapid kernel fill and shell split—when water stress shows up as smaller nuts, fewer splits, harder shaking, and more blanks. After shake, the question flips: how much water does this variety still need while leaves are green, and how soon is “cutoff” too soon?

That is a narrower target than “pistachios are drought tolerant, so we can shut it off.”

What Stage 3 Is Doing to the Crop

Pistachio fruit growth is unusual: the shell reaches near-full size weeks before rapid kernel growth begins. UC work divides the preharvest season into three periods (Goldhamer and Beede, Journal of Horticultural Science & Biotechnology, 2004; summarized in UC pistachio drought and production guidance):

  1. Stage 1 — leafout through full shell expansion
  2. Stage 2 — full shell expansion to the onset of rapid kernel growth (shell hardening)
  3. Stage 3 — rapid kernel growth through harvest

Stage 3 is the most stress-sensitive period for current-crop quality. Water deprivation in that window significantly reduced individual nut size, shell splitting, mechanical nut removal by shaking, and yield, while increasing kernel blanking and abortion. UCCE drought presentations (Culumber and Zaccaria and related UC drought slides) put the practical message the same way: minimize stress during nut fill; severe stress from late June through mid-September can cut harvestability and shell split.

Shell split itself is driven by physical expansion of the kernel, not by waiting for an abscission zone to “finish.” Bob Beede’s Farm Progress harvest notes (drawing on his UCCE pistachio task-list guidance) are blunt: water stress during Stage 3 reduces split percentages. If splits look weak, check Stage 1 and Stage 3 irrigation first—not only harvest timing.

Stage 2 Can Carry More Deficit Than Harvest Does

Regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) research does not treat every month the same.

Across UC summaries of Goldhamer and Beede, the best-studied water-saving window is Stage 2, where about 50% of near-potential ETc often maintained production while improving irrigation water-use efficiency. Postharvest reductions paired with that Stage 2 deficit were part of the higher-efficiency regimes. Stage 1 can tolerate some deficit with tradeoffs (sometimes higher split percentage offset by smaller nut weight). Stage 3 is where cutting hard costs current-crop quality.

UCCE drought guidance also notes that for Stage 2, midday stem water potential in roughly the -15 to -18 bar neighborhood has been discussed as a research context for controlled deficit—not a dashboard default for every block. Confirm plant-side targets with your CCA and local baseline.

The field implication for early September: if you are still filling kernels or chasing splits, you are not in the Stage 2 savings window anymore. Do not import a mid-season RDI cut into hull-slip and shake week.

Harvest Access Is Not the Same as a Long Dry-Down

Almond “dry-down” language does not transfer cleanly to pistachio.

Beede’s harvest tips note that, if Alternaria pressure is not driving the decision, watering up to within about three or four days of shaking is common, and that pistachios do not need an extended dry-down period the way almonds sometimes do to protect trunks from shaker damage. It is also common to keep irrigating blocks that are still waiting while other rows are being shaken.

UCCE Kern County writing on Golden Hills (Craig Kallsen, SJV Trees and Vines / West Coast Nut) goes further for early cultivars: in hot weather, there is little reason to run a bone-dry root zone into harvest. Heat-stressed trees through and after harvest can cost nut quality and yield this year and next. For Golden Hills, if you cannot get in within a couple of days after shutting water off, the irrigation system or scheduling—not the calendar—is usually the constraint.

Preharvest cutoff timing still depends on weather, disease pressure, soil texture, split development, and orchard access. The point is intentional access management, not accidental Stage 3 drought.

Post-Harvest Water: Kerman Research Is Not a Universal Cutoff

After shake, pistachio trees often still hold green leaves for weeks. Fall canopy matters for carbohydrate production and storage that support next season’s growth; UC and UCCE summaries note that pistachios accumulate meaningful current-season carbohydrates that feed later kernel fill, and that fall storage is part of the tree’s reserve story even when next year’s flower initiation is largely earlier than in almond.

Goldhamer and Beede’s Kerman work found that a 70–75% reduction in irrigation from about Oct. 1 to Nov. 15 in the San Joaquin Valley did not adversely affect following-season yields. UCCE Fresno writing on fall and winter irrigation for nut crops (Mae Culumber, SJV Trees and Vines) restates that finding and translates it for managers who use an October 1 cutoff: that window can amount to a full deficit of roughly 4.88 inches of water from October through November under the Five Points reference they cite. Kerman is often harvested in the second or third week of September—close enough to that October window that a hard late cutoff may be less disruptive.

Earlier varieties are a different risk.

Golden Hills and Lost Hills are commonly harvested weeks earlier than Kerman—sometimes by roughly two weeks or more for mature Golden Hills in the same location, and in southern SJV sometimes by late August or early September. Culumber notes that those earlier varieties may be very susceptible if irrigation is cut off or severely deficit-irrigated right after an early harvest, while August–September pistachio ETc in the Five Points example still exceeds 16 inches across those two months. Kallsen’s Golden Hills harvest notes add that experimental Golden Hills trees often received generous postharvest water because they sat inside larger Kerman blocks still being irrigated, and that attempting Kerman-style postharvest RDI on early-harvest Golden Hills may not match those trial results. His practical advice while leaves are green: continue to meet mature-tree water needs after harvest for roughly another month to six weeks when optimal yields are the goal.

UC drought slides commonly summarize postharvest deficit near ~25% of ETc as the researched Kerman-style savings level, with an explicit caution that more work is needed on earlier-harvested cultivars. Beede’s advisor notes land in a similar practical band: a little post-harvest water, often discussed as about 25–50% of ETc, to relieve shaker stress and improve fall nutrient uptake. Sparse spring canopy and reduced nut size in his irrigation research observations were characteristic of insufficient water around leaf-out—another reason not to treat postharvest as optional recovery for trees that were hammered through shake.

Put simply: Kerman research justifies a large late-season reduction after mid-September harvest. It does not justify copying an October 1 mindset onto a Golden Hills block shaken in late August.

What to Check Before You Change the Schedule

Use this as a field list, not a diagnosis.

  1. Confirm the stage: still in kernel fill / shell split (Stage 3), at hull slip and shake, or already postharvest with green leaves.
  2. Separate varieties on the calendar. Kerman, Golden Hills, and Lost Hills do not share one harvest-to-cutoff distance.
  3. Compare applied water to expected crop use for the period you are in—not only to last year’s total inches. Beede’s task-list averages often cited for planning context include roughly 9.8 inches in July, 8.3 inches in August, and about 2.8 inches for the first two weeks of September (local CIMIS and your Kc still win).
  4. Check soil moisture or soil tension at more than one depth. A wet surface after a short set does not prove the mid-root zone refilled.
  5. If you use a pressure chamber, compare midday stem water potential to a weather-adjusted baseline and to stage-appropriate stress tolerance—not to a single absolute number for the whole season.
  6. Look at flow and pressure on the set. A clogged filter or a valve that never opened will look like “the trees need more hours.”
  7. Ask whether the next change is finishing Stage 3, a short pre-shake access pause, or a deliberate postharvest deficit by variety.

A schedule that saved water cleanly in Stage 2 can be the wrong schedule in Stage 3 for reasons that have nothing to do with a broken pump.
