What a Dropping Well Water Level May Mean
If you notice your well water level dropping while the pump is running, it is understandable to worry that the well is running dry or the groundwater supply is declining. However, a lower water level during pumping is not automatically a sign that the entire aquifer is in trouble.
Water levels naturally change when a pump is operating. The more useful questions are how far the level drops, whether it stabilizes, how quickly it recovers, and whether those patterns are changing over time.
Static Water Level, Pumping Level and Drawdown
The static water level is the depth of the water when the pump is off, and the well has had time to recover.
The pumping water level is the depth of the water while the pump is running. The difference between the static and pumping levels is called drawdown.
Some drawdown is normal. Concern may be warranted when drawdown increases under similar conditions, the pumping level continues falling, recovery slows, or the water level approaches the pump intake.
Why Is My Well Water Level Dropping More Than Usual?
Several factors can cause a lower pumping level.
Longer Pumping Cycles
A well that runs longer may experience greater drawdown, especially during peak irrigation periods or hot weather. A reading taken near the end of a long cycle may be much lower than one taken shortly after startup.
Seasonal Groundwater Changes
Groundwater levels often rise and fall throughout the year. Rainfall, drought, nearby irrigation, and seasonal demand can all affect both static and pumping levels.
Comparing measurements from similar times of year can help distinguish a seasonal pattern from a longer-term decline.
Nearby Pumping
Other wells drawing from the same groundwater formation may temporarily lower the water level in your well. This is especially common during periods of heavy agricultural pumping.
Slow Recovery
Recovery is the rise in water level after the pump shuts off.
A well that once recovered quickly but now takes longer may be receiving water more slowly. This can be related to groundwater conditions, nearby pumping, screen restrictions or declining well efficiency.
Plugged Well Screens
Well screens allow groundwater to enter the casing. Mineral deposits, sediment, biological growth, or corrosion can restrict that movement over time.
A plugged or restricted screen may cause greater drawdown and slower recovery even when water is still available outside the well.
Declining Well Efficiency
As well efficiency declines, more drawdown may be required to produce the same amount of water. The pump may still operate, but the water level may fall farther or take longer to recover.
Changes in flow, pressure, pumping duration and energy use can provide additional clues.
Does a Falling Pumping Level Mean the Aquifer Is Declining?
Not necessarily. A single low reading may be influenced by pumping duration, seasonal demand, nearby wells or changes within the well itself.
A broader groundwater decline may be more likely when static water levels also continue to fall over time. A well performance issue may be more likely when static levels remain fairly consistent but drawdown increases, recovery slows, or water production decreases. These patterns cannot provide a complete diagnosis, but they can help determine when professional testing or inspection may be needed.
Why One Measurement Is Not Enough
A manual reading only shows what was happening at one moment.
One measurement may be taken five minutes after startup, while another may be taken near the end of a long irrigation cycle. Both may be accurate, but they do not provide a fair comparison.
Tracking water levels over time helps answer more useful questions:
- How far does the level fall during a normal cycle?
- Does the pumping level stabilize?
- How quickly does the well recover?
- Are seasonal lows becoming more severe?
- Is the same amount of drawdown producing less water?
The pattern is usually more informative than any individual reading.
