Most farms already have valves. The question is who has to stand next to them.

Remote irrigation valve control means a supported valve can be opened, closed, or run on a schedule from a phone or a dashboard instead of a truck. It is not a new irrigation method. It is a labor and timing change on top of the laterals, solenoids, and blocks you already run.

What actually changes

Three things, and only three:

  1. You stop burning a trip to start or stop a set on a far block, a night set, or a weekend set.
  2. You can act on a number (soil tension, a tank, a well) instead of acting on the last time someone was in that field.
  3. You can put a human back in the loop from anywhere, which is different from “the farm runs itself.”

What does not change: pipe sizing, emitter uniformity, filter flushing, or the agronomy of the crop. A remote valve will faithfully overwater a leaky block if you tell it to.

When it is worth the install

Remote control earns its keep when at least one of these is true:

  • Blocks are spread out, and the person who knows the set is not the person parked next to the valve.
  • You already irrigate at night or on odd hours to chase power rates, wind, or heat.
  • You are tired of “did it shut off?” as a 9 p.m. question.
  • You want soil data and valve action in one place, not a sensor app and a separate timer.

If every valve is 40 feet from the shop and someone is always there, a timer or a manual solenoid may still be the honest answer.

What “supported valve” means in practice

Farms do not all use the same hardware. Latch solenoids, 24 VAC valves, existing filter stations, and older hydraulic setups are all in the wild. Remote control only works on valves the station can actually drive.

  1. See soil and equipment from the shop.
  2. Control a valve by hand from the phone when the reading says it is time.
  3. Automate only the blocks where the threshold has been stable long enough that you trust it overnight.

Skipping straight to full automation on a block you do not yet understand is how you get a 6-hour set into a full profile. Remote manual control is the safer first win.
